Creating Messages

Once a new message appears on the screen of your Palm Handheld, you might want to address it. Enter the recipient's email address(es) in the to field and message subject in the subject field.  You may click the to, cc or bcc buttons to look up for addresses in the Address program on your Palm Handheld and select your desired recipient(s).

When creating or replying to riteMail messages, you have the following tools available via the riteMail Write Message Toolbar at the bottom of your screen (options shown from left to right):

  • Close : This action saves the current message into the Draft folder, message's original folder or most recently selected folder as explained earlier.
  • Send : Sends the current message to the riteMail Outbox.
  • Color: This tool opens the color box and allows you to choose up to 11 ink colors on 256 color models as shown below, Tap the color of your choice to select it and continue to draw and write in the new color.

On grayscale models of Palm, up to 18 shades of gray are available,
and On Palm handhelds with high resolution screens and enhanced
color palette, riteMail application supports 32 colors.

  • Line Thickness: This tool allows you to choose the ink width. You can select one of the five ink widths

  • Writing Tools: The Writing Tools button (pencil) allows you to choose the following digital writing tools, from left to right:
    • Pencil: The pencil has a round lead and is the tool most often used when creating or responding to riteMail messages.
    • Pen: The pen simulates a chisel point marker or a fountain pen and is useful for adding calligraphy or other artistic effects to your riteMail messages.
    • Eraser: The eraser works like a liquid paper, erasing everything it passes over and replacing it with the background color.

  • Remove Strokes : This tool allows you to delete entire strokes at once.  Draw a line across the stroke(s) you wish to delete.  With this tool selected, drawing a horizontal line across the screen from LEFT TO RIGHT deletes all content BELOW the line.   Drawing a horizontal line from RIGHT TO LEFT deletes all content ABOVE the line.
  • Scroll : When this button is selected, you can scroll your riteMail message up and down by "dragging" it with your pen
  • riteShape : The riteShape tool automatically converts your freehand shapes into perfect geometrical objects.  It recognizes quadrangles, triangles, ovals, arrows and arbitrary "polylines" and allows you to draw high quality quick charts.  When selected, riteShape converts everything you write or draw into smoothed shapes.  You will normally want to deactivate this tool when your precise drawing is complete.  The following images illustrate a rectangle before (left) and after (right) the riteShape feature is used:

To draw an arrow, first make its "body" and then add one or two "angles" at its ends.

  • Undo : This tool deletes the last stroke in your message.  If you are using the riteShape smoothing tool, the Undo button first recovers the initial (non-smoothed) strokes and then deletes them on the second tap.  This feature allows you to freely mix smoothed shapes and regular writing and drawing without having to constantly care about toggling the riteShape tool on and off.
  • Navigation arrows : In addition to Scroll button and navigation arrows, you can navigate your handwritten messages using "Graffiti panel" on your device ( drag your stylus across the panel to navigate the message) or jog wheel or other navigation buttons on your device (may not be available on some models)

In addition, the following functions are available from the Message, Edit and View menus:

  • Delete: To delete the message from the respective message folder, choose Delete item from the Message menu. This action cannot be undone.  You will be prompted to confirm your decision.

You can use standard Graffiti shortcuts (shown next to the respective actions on the screenshot below) to quickly perform any function in  the Notes menu.

  • Clear All: To clear the entire message, choose Clear All item from the Message menu. This action cannot be undone.  You will be prompted to confirm your decision.

  • Paper Settings: You can change the "stationery" in your riteMail message by selecting this item from the Edit menu. It allows you to use custom paper color and grid color and appearance.

Below are samples of custom riteMail stationery.

  • Zoom: By default, your message will be arranged to fit the screen of your device. You can zoom the message to the "100% view" and on some models of Palm handhelds also to the "50% view" in order to view fine details and to create higher resolution electronic ink.

  • Support for larger screens: On Palm Powered Handhelds with "collapsible" Graffiti area (such as certain Palm OS 5 models of Sony Clie), riteMail supports writing on the expanded screen.
