Two ways of sending riteMail messages
riteMail software can send messages directly
or through the riteMail service. When messages are sent directly,
they arrive into recipient's mailbox as text messages; in order to view
ane respond to such messages in handwriting, the recipient needs to
download and install riteMail client software.
In case messages are sent through the riteMail service, they
arrive to the target mailbox as
regular HTML email, where ink content is represented as an image, so
no special software is required to view such messages. Moreover,
recipients can reply in their own handwriting without installing any
additional software. When a recipient clicks on such
message, the default Web browser will pop up, displaying the reply form with
a Java
applet served by riteMail service, ready to accept a handwritten
response.
Communication protocols
riteMail software can send messages
from a Pocket PC Phone or PDA using one of three means:
- through the default mail client -
Pocket Outlook
- via direct SMTP connection to riteMail's
mail server or any other
SMTP server, specified by the user; or
- via HTTP link with riteMail
service.
The last method, sending digital ink
messages over the HTTP connection to the service, provides the fastest way of sending messages. It
does not require user configuration, eliminates the overhead of standard
mail protocols
and is your best bet in traversing firewalls. User-defined SMTP server works well in case you do not want to
rely on the riteMail service. To use this method, you have to be aware about
the configuration of SMTP
server of your ISP or mail service provider. In case you have Pocket Outlook already configured to handle email
exchange on your device, this option is also a good way to send
riteMail messages.
riteMail application can receive
messages using the following methods:
- by peeking the incoming mail
from the Pocket Outlook inbox folders
- by receiving digital ink messages directly
via POP3 or IMAP4 protocols.
Pocket Outlook folders are
immediately visible in the riteMail folder tree and require no
configuration. Configuring direct
mail is similar to standard mailbox configuration in, say, Outlook Express
and is facilitated by an easy to follow wizard.
